Explore Virginia Cider from Orchard to Glass

Cider

Cider has been part of Virginia’s agricultural story for more than 400 years, with roots tracing back to the Commonwealth’s earliest colonial settlements. What began as an everyday beverage has evolved into a thriving industry, with cider makers across Virginia combining centuries-old traditions with modern techniques and inventive flavors.

Today, Virginia is home to more than 30 cideries producing a wide range of styles, from crisp, dry ciders that showcase the character of individual apple varieties to creative blends, fruit infusions and co-fermentations. Much like wine, cider reflects the craftsmanship of its maker, with carefully balanced acidity, tannins and a range of sweetness shaping each glass.

Virginia’s cideries are found in settings ranging from family-owned orchards and countryside farms to urban tasting rooms, each offering a different perspective on the Commonwealth’s cider industry. The new Virginia Cider Trail connects these destinations, offering a closer look at the places and people behind Virginia Cider.

Experience Virginia Cider Beyond the Trail

From seasonal festivals to tastings at local cideries, there are plenty of ways to experience Virginia’s cider culture throughout the year. These events bring together cider makers and enthusiasts to celebrate the apples, traditions and craftsmanship behind each pour.

One upcoming opportunity is the Second Annual Cider Festival, taking place Saturday, November 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton. Presented in partnership with Virginia Humanities and the Virginia Cider Association, the festival brings Virginia’s cider heritage to life with tastings, living history demonstrations, author talks and live music.

Attend the Cider Festival

On Saturday, November 14, from 5 to 7 p.m., Albemarle CiderWorks in North Garden will host its annual Cider Smackdown, bringing together Virginia cider makers for a friendly tasting competition. This year’s event highlights single-varietal ciders, showcasing how different apple varieties influence flavor and aroma. Guests can participate in a blind tasting, vote for their favorite cider and enjoy charcuterie while connecting with cider makers and fellow enthusiasts.
