As crisp autumn air settles over Virginia and leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold, the magic of the season fills the vineyards. October marks Virginia Wine Month—a perfect time to immerse yourself in the local wine community and celebrate the harvest.
A Harvest to Celebrate
Virginia’s unique climate and diverse landscape impart distinct character to its wines. For optimal wine production, each year’s grape harvest varies from the start date, duration and overall conditions. This year’s harvest is one of the earliest on record, with some wineries concluding their final picking before the official start to fall. Year after year, producing wine in Virginia is a reflection both the land and the dedication of those who cultivate it.
When talking with the Virginia Vineyards Association’s past president, Skip Causey of Potomac Point Winery, his excitement was evident:
“Everyone has been pleased with this year’s fruit, which boasts great balance among Brix, pH, and acidity. The drought and heat have intensified the fruit, leading to smaller, more concentrated yields.”
Wineries with fruit remaining in the vineyard will continue to watch weather patterns to harvest at peak times but the excitement amongst vintners across the Commonwealth for the 2024 vintage is clear.
Celebrate Virginia Wine Month
With over 300 wineries, cideries, and meaderies throughout the state, October is the perfect time to explore Virginia’s wine scene. Many wineries are hosting celebrations featuring local food, live music and, of course, their favorite bottles. Gather your friends, plan a visit, and raise a glass to Virginia Wine Month.
Celebrate along the Gold Medal Wine Trail! Users that either unlock their first check-in on the pass or active pass-holders that visit a new stop on the trail will automatically be entered to win a Virginia Wine prize bundle. Don’t forget to tag @vawine as you explore and attend local wine events. Personalize your adventure using the Virginia Wine app, request a winery guide, and stock up on Virginia wines to enjoy anywhere.
On October 19th, join the Commonwealth for the Harvest Party, a day dedicated to toasting Virginia’s richness. People will gather across cities and the countryside to enjoy local food and wine, with special dinners and curated tasting flights available nearby.
Stay tuned for the upcoming launch of the third edition of Cornus Virginicus, a limited-release wine crafted by Mountain & Vine Vineyards and Winery in collaboration with First Lady of Virginia Suzanne S. Youngkin, supporting the State Fair of Virginia Applied Youth Scholarship Program.
Happy Virginia Wine Month!
