Inside the 2026 Virginia Governor’s Cup® Competition

Governor's Cup Other

Each year, the Virginia Wine community gathers to recognize and celebrate exceptional wines and ciders from across the Commonwealth. The Virginia Governor’s Cup® Competition exists to spotlight the craftsmanship, creativity, and diversity of the state’s best producers.

Now in its 44th year, the Virginia Governor’s Cup® continues to elevate Virginia Wine, with anticipation building as judging unfolds and the season’s top honors near announcement.

A Competition That Sets the Standard

Since 1982, the Governor’s Cup Competition has challenged Virginia producers to raise the bar, vintage after vintage. Every entry is crafted from 100 percent Virginia-grown fruit, ensuring the results reflect the state’s distinct terroir and agricultural depth.

Following a major judging refinement in 2011, the competition earned national respect for its rigor and integrity. In 2021, the introduction of the Cider of the Year Award expanded that recognition to Virginia’s thriving cider industry, celebrating excellence beyond the vineyard. Additional Best in Show category recognitions further highlight high-performing varieties across the competition.

How Winners Are Chosen

All wines and ciders are evaluated blind on a 100-point scale by an elite judging panel of sommeliers, educators, writers, and industry professionals. Judges assess each entry for balance, quality, expression, and commercial appeal before advancing top scorers to the final round.

In the finals, a highly selective group of judges determines the Governor’s Cup Case, consisting of the top-scoring 12 wines that represent the pinnacle of Virginia winemaking, along with the Cider of the Year.

This year’s panel includes some of the most respected voices in the wine world, featuring Masters of Wine and a Master Sommelier alongside nationally recognized critics and industry leaders. Their expertise underscores the rigor and prestige of the Governor’s Cup judging process.

What Makes 2026 Stand Out

With more than 670 wines, ciders, and meads submitted by over 150 wineries, the 2026 competition is one of the most competitive yet. New entry limits encouraged wineries to submit only their strongest bottlings, elevating the overall quality of the field. Expanded Best in Show category recognitions will also spotlight exceptional performances across key varieties.

As judging continues, excitement is building not only for the announcement of this year’s winners, but for creativity that defines the Governor’s Cup experience with the annual Virginia Governor’s Cup® Gala.
